Five Reasons Why Blogging Isn’t Scary

We’ve decided to devote the entire month of October to talking about business blogging… it’s BLOGtober!

In honor of Halloween’s approach, we’d like to share with you a ghastly tale. Imagine sitting in front of your computer, with your WordPress site open and the cursor blinking at you from within an empty post. Feel your blood pressure rising? The anxiety? The tension? It’s… just… not… Ugh. Another evening spent second-guessing and procrastinating because blogging is just too hard. You don’t like to write. And even if you did, what do you write about? And you have to write how many words?

Before you’ve even begun, blogging feels way too scary.

Really, blogging isn’t as frightening as you might think. We promise! We hear it from everyone: “I HATE writing.” Even Hemingway famously said, “There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.” Well, no one wants to sit at their MacBook and bleed in Calibri, (or horror of all horrors—comic sans!) but we’ve already discussed why blogging is so important.

And here’s the secret: you’re not Hemingway. You’re just someone with some expertise in a particular area who’s trying to a) share that expertise, benefiting your customer’s lives, and b) get eyeballs on your site.

Take it from one of the most prolific authors of all time, Agatha Christie: “Write even when you don’t want to, don’t much like what you’re writing, and aren’t writing particularly well.” You don’t need to be a perfectionist; actually you really can’t be when blogging. You need to push out content – especially when waiting too long runs the risk of losing timeliness and relevance.

So here are five things to remember that’ll take the bogeyman out of blogging:

1. You already know what you’re talking about. You’re the expert in your field and you’ve got something to say – not like a college student who’s trying to BS their way through an essay on a book they never read. You know everything about the growth and care of succulents or the proper care of a foreign car between oil changes. Whatever your business expertise is, share it!

2. Google takes care of the rest. From the right way to spell entrepreneur to how many people bought widget X in the last year, you can always research what you don’t know.

3. You can write just how you talk…but  without all the ums. You don’t need to be perfect; this doesn’t need to be Dostoevsky.  Blogging is casual, blogging is conversational, blogging is being part of a community. Readers will appreciate that you’re talking to them, not at or above them.

4. You can hire someone to take care of the copy editing if you’re not the most spelling/grammar oriented person. Or you can run your blog post past your favorite English Lit major for spelling and grammar issues. Again, don’t be a perfectionist; let someone else do it for you!

Hopefully now your heart rate is returning to normal, and the blood is flowing to your face again. You might even feel a little bit pumped up, like you want to start writing something. Open up that document and just bleed… er, pour yourself into your blog.
