What Life Coaching Means To Me
As some of you may know, my journey as a life coach started before I even knew life coaching existed. At a young age, I started showing interest for personal development, spirituality, philosophy, and human behaviour. It happened that I started reading books about the above subjects around the same time as started snowboarding. As I progressed into my snowboarding career I kept exploring my personal limits and experimenting with the things I was learning through my readings. Traveling, competing, injuries, victories and down falls all taught me a whole lot that books could only point towards.
Looking back I can say that my success was highly connected with my mind set, my passion, the environment I putted myself in and the people I surrounded myself with. Notice that talent, sacrifices and hard work is not on the list. I don’t believe we make sacrifices, I believe we make choices… I don’t believe in hard work, I believe in inspiring work… And I believe talent is not as relevant as simple predisposition… It’s more about putting yourself through the process and about the things you believe you can do. Talent really only goes so far. Dedication, passion, excitement, curiosity and enjoyment takes you the whole way.
Where am I going with this? Well the thing is, looking back through all the competitive sports I practiced and through my experience with the educational system, I can say that there was a big lack in teaching performance and life skills. You see, I had to go out on my own looking for the tools and knowledge I felt I was missing in order to succeed at living my own authentic life. In fact, it’s one of my mission to bring these life skills to the youth so can be well prepare to live their own authentic fulfilled life from the get go.
So what does Life Coaching means to me? Well it means the world to me obviously. Without the life lessons and skills I have learned through books and mentor while pursuing my childhood dream and passion, I can say I would have never made it. I would have given in to fit in the mould society had ready for me. I would have given up when things went wrong or time were hard. I would have left others tell me who I was and what I should be doing. Even worst, I would have left my own negative self-talk bring me down and keep me from getting out of my comfort zone.
Now, I want to make myself clear about one thing… I’m not perfect and I don’t own this knowledge… I practice it… and always will. What I mean is that the minute you say “I got it” it’s gone. Knowledge without implementation is not worth anything. We are constantly moving, adapting, changing and creating ourselves. Another mentor of mine told me “You are green and growing of ripe and rotten”… You choose…
What else life coaching means to me… Well, Life coaching is an integrated process where the client is as important as the life coach… Actually the client is more important and knows more than the coach about what is good for them. As a life coach it is my job to facilitate changes and to give the client a few paths to choose from. Yet the client choose the path, is responsible for walking and for the pace he choose to adapt.
Life Coaching means we share our knowledge, we help people explore the answers that lies within them that they simply might not have noticed yet.
