The purpose of the Mentoring sessions is for you to have the opportunity to practice your Coaching and receive feedback in a live setting. You will also have the opportunity to receive Coaching so you may experience it from a Client’s perspective and to give feedback to other Coaches as a learning exercise. You will receive feedback based on the ICF Core Competencies as a further point of learning from 2 peers and your Mentor..
1. All participants MUST have:
a) A LANDLINE connection
b) a microphone that works; and
c) a quiet room with no background noise
You will be conducting Coaching over the GoToWebinar system and as it’s run over the internet, the better quality your connection and microphone, the easier it will be to hear you. If there are technical issues “on the night” we will have to stop your Coaching session and have someone else step in.
WHAT YOU MUST DO
1. Show up for all classes. If you do not attend, you miss out and someone else will be given the opportunity to take your place.
2. Before attending each class, test your speakers and microphone are working. There will be no time in class for technical challenges so it’s up to you to make sure that you are ready to go live to speak and listen as soon as you enter the class.
IF YOU ARE THE “CLIENT”
Bring something REAL and SPECIFIC to the session, something that is NOT as you wish it to be in your life right now. You must be able to say it in ONE sentence. It must be something that you can quickly articulate so your Coach can get on with Coaching – e.g. “I’m just not happy with my life” may take a long time to get to the heart of the matter; whereas, “I’m feeling stuck in my business” / “I’m having a huge argument with my partner” is more specific and your Coach will be able to serve you with some great Coaching in the short, 15-minute session. If you can’t think of something, do a quick Wheel of Life and see which area is the lowest for you and then pick one aspect that is not as you wish it to be – and ask to be coached on THAT.
IF YOU ARE THE “COACH”
This is a very fast session and you will not have time to do all the regular steps of a Coaching session. To help you get to the heart of the matter very quickly, please follow these tips:
a) Assume rapport. Do not spend minutes attempting to build up rapport, ask the Client how their day was or asking them if they are ready to be Coached. You must act as if all this has already happened. The Client will bring you a one-sentence issue and you must start Coaching immediately.
b) Do not allow your Client to go into their “story” or background of why this issue is the way it is. Any time they start to tell you a story or loop around, bring them quickly back to the issue at hand and continue with your Coaching questions.
c) Remember, there is nothing to “fix” and nothing to “prove”. This is a learning experience so give it your whole heart and stay open. Concentrate on being present with the Client. Active listening and great questioning are your focus. Helping the Client come to their OWN new insights and realisations is all you need to do – and that will happen if you ask lots of great questions and be strict but kind. Don’t let them indulge in story. Bring them to cause FAST, call them on their storytelling and allow them to make new discoveries.
IF YOU ARE A “LISTENER”
Listen carefully to the COACH and the CLIENT, not the STORY or the CONTENT. Listen for the skills that the Coach used, what they did well and what they missed. Listen to the Client and what you feel they didn’t say or anything that you might have done differently. Base your feedback on ONE ICF Core Competency and speak only to that. At the end of the session, you will be called upon immediately to give your 2 - 3 MINUTES of feedback. Keep it brief and polite, respectful and truthful. Do not “Go easy” on the Coach – for this is your moment to Coach THEM so make sure you give them something USEFUL to work on. Give them real, useful feedback. Treat them as the fellow professional that they are and remain polite, respectful and encouraging at all times.
PLACES WILL BE ASSIGNED ON A VOLUNTEER BASIS AT THE START OF EACH SESSION.
WE ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO COME ALONG EVERY WEEK AND VOLUNTEER AT LEAST ONCE TO COACH, ONCE TO BE COACHED AND TWICE TO LISTEN.
This group process only works if we all play our part and step up to learn from each other.
